We've been a whole week sharing talks, presentations and development with the 5 groups invited to this 'lab' realized on the fantastic installations of L'Animal a L'Esquena. The 'lab' was fullfilled with some presentations from diferent experts and artists from the digital scene like Toni Mira (coreographer and dancer who created from 20 years ago with image, optics, video and interactivity in his dance shows), Jean Marc Matos (dancer and coreographer from the K-Danse french company who have been working also for 20 years with experimental interactive dance projects), Arturo Castro (computer coder who is expertised in software development and who is also part of Playmodes project), Alex Posada (electric engineer specialized in open hardware development for new interfaces and interactions, member of Neuronoise music group). It was a pleasure to listen to their talks about their processes and ideas,it was inspiring and pedagogic experience.

We used our time on this lab try out in real size and dance conditions our last addons to the first version of Playmodes. We had the collaboration from some of the students of the Lanimal.org master and Maria Claudia was dancing and explorating the sampling effects during the whole lab. For us was important to establish a connection with the dancer in order to find out how a coreography could be played trough Playmodes. We'll show some of the tests we made in these days of collaboration...

We started with the effect Rec-Loop which works as an audiovisual overdubbed buffer synched on time with the music, Then 1 length of a pattern of music is for recording, then 1 length of a pattern is used for changing position. The goal is to build a real-time video coreography mixing diferent movements of the dancer in diferents moments in time. We woud be exploring the multi-camera approach to all our effects to be able to play a 'live cinema' session, dealing with diferent cameras and the narrative of cinema in real time and overdubbed.

^ This video shows some of the test we made with this effect. In this case the coordination of movements in time and space of the dancer creates a sequence of dialogues which appear when each copy is added to the last ones. The final result is an auto-coreographic composition tool in time lapses.

^ Here you can see some tests we made with the 'time displacement' or 'slit-scan' effect. The effect was invented by the brilliant filmmaker Zbignew Rybczynski in an experimental film called The Fourth Dimension in 1988.We tested with an implementation done by Jesús Gollonet in SummerLab in Laboral, Gijon, july 2008. We were exploring it's properties for introducing it into 'vample' show.

^ Last video is from the Random effect. On this case, the dancer moves and sings and what we see on screen is a Random re-interpretation of the sampled audiovisual piece. The random is picked up from the 7 seconds buffer and it is quantized to music, so each random jump to a new position is done in sync with the music tempo.

^This video is another example of the random effect usage. This time the playhead jumps are done at very high rates, but also in sync with the music.

^During our time in l'Animal we've been exploring some new ways of communication between the dancer and the audiovisual system. One of this forms of relationship between dance and AV was the Indexer mode we've developed, which permits the dancer to trigger the recording of a loop using her own voice. In the first video we see the process of recording, and in the second video we can see how this recorded loops are manipulated.

INTERACTIVE DIGITAL MEDIA ON STAGE
From November 17 to 25, 2008
Public presentation:
November 22 at 6pm, L’Animal a l’esquena

As part of our activities aimed at promoting the theory and practice of the use of interactive digital media in performance projects, NU2's is organising a new international lab for artists from various disciplines interested in sharing, analysing and developing ideas based on projects currently in progress.

Participants must be working on a project or want to develop a system that implies working with the body and the performer's movement, regardless of whether the artist or group comes from the field of choreography, music or visual arts. A team of highly experienced professionals, programmers, choreographers and stage directors will help participants in their research and work towards bringing the projects to fruition.

The Laboratory is organised by NU2’s in collaboration with l’Animal a l’esquena, in the framework of the Euroregional project Corpus MediaL'Animal a l'esquena it is situated in Celrà (region of Girona), it was created by María Muñoz and Pep Ramis -artistic directors of Mal Pelo-. L'animal responds to the necessity of their founders to create a dance company infraestrcutre in a form of exchange network with other artists and creatives. From 2001, Toni Cots -director and artistic producer of international projects for scenic arts- joins the project and from then they all share the artistic direction of l'Animal. Beyond of being a creation center, it has a lot to offer in formation and difussion.(info from nu2s.org)
