Kinetic Light & Sound
ZFIL - Unna. May 2024
Playmodes exhibit their installation “Signes” at ZFIL (Center for International Light Art) in Unna, Germany. With RADIANT, the Center for International Light Art presents visual worlds of sound. The digital-kinetic, audiovisual exhibition allows visitors to immerse themselves completely in a world in which the boundaries between light, art and technology merge. An international selection of interdisciplinary artist collectives present installations that create immersive and changeable spaces and transform the vaults of the former Lindenbrewery. The collaboration between a wide range of disciplines from art, lighting technology, software development and music results in pioneering works that push the boundaries of audiovisual media. Among installations like Anima, by Nick Verstand, or ROW by Tundra, Playmodes presents Signes. The artwork deals with the relationship between kinetic, luminous and acoustic phenomena. A generative algorithm ensures that the graphic, kinetic and acoustic elements are tightly related and never exactly repeated, surprising with constantly new visual and sonic experiences. Behind the final form of Signes, a matricial canvas of 12x4 rotating custom light bars, lays a handcrafted set of software and hardware elements built by the artists themselves. Conceived as an autonomous visual music instrument, Signes will premiere a new rule-based behavior crafted specially for the RADIANT exhibition. A lively landscape of kinetics, light and sound, which blur the limits between natural behaviors and digital automation. ZFIL, in Unna (Westfalia, Germany) is one of the few art centers in Europe devoted exclusively to the exhibition of light art. Among its permanent collection there are artworks by international references in the field like James Turrell, Olafur Eliasson or Rebecca Horn, among many others. The temporary RADIANT exhibition will be held between April 27th and October 27th during 2024. www.lichtkunst-unna.de www.playmodes.com
